The shipment of large-size liquid crystal display panels (TFTLCD) reached a record high in the third quarter of 2018. Shipment area grew 14% year-on-year to 52 million square meters, while shipment volume grew 7% year-on-year to 197 million pieces. In the third quarter, LCD TV panel shipments reached 75 million units, a year-on-year growth of 9%, while the shipment area reached 40.7 million square meters, a year-on-year growth of 15%. Both shipment volume and shipment area reached record highs.
In the first half of 2018, panel manufacturers continued to be under operating pressure brought about by the decline in panel prices. Therefore, after panel makers had cleared their inventory at a lower price before, when demand increased in July due to preparations for the fourth quarter sales season, panel prices also started to rise.
Liquid crystal display panels also grew substantially in the third quarter. Shipment reached 40 million pieces, a year-on-year growth of 14%, and the shipment area reached 6.1 million square meters, a year-on-year growth of 19%. The main driving force for the growth of LCD panel shipments comes from the growth of high-end large-size displays, such as professional monitors and game monitors, as evidenced by a 17% increase in shipments of large-size LCD panels of 27 inches and above in the third quarter.
Mainland China panel manufacturer BOE continued to lead its competitors with a 23% market share of large-size panel shipments in the third quarter, while South Korean manufacturer LG Display and Taiwanese manufacturer Innolux achieved 20% and 17%. % Shares are ranked second and third.
However, in terms of shipping area, South Korean manufacturer LG Display leads with 21% market share, followed by BOE and Samsung Display with 18% and 15%. LCD TV panels accounted for the largest proportion of large-size display panel shipments, reaching 78%, while South Korean manufacturers LG Display and Samsung Display still lead the market. In the third quarter, LG Display’s shipment area share was 19%, followed by Samsung Display and BOE with 17% and 16%.
