It is reported that the market research organization IHS Markit said in a report released a few days ago that LG Display’s LCD panel market share in the fourth quarter of last year was 14.3%, ranking fourth, down two quarters from the previous quarter grade. LG Display had been the number one until the first quarter of 2018, but it was squeezed to the fourth place by Chinese display manufacturers such as BOE.
As of the third quarter of last year, LG Display’s LCD market share was 15.5%, second only to BOE’s 18.9%. However, in the fourth quarter, Taiwan’s Innolux Electronics (16.0%) and China’s CSOT Electronics (14.4%) took the second and third positions ahead of LG Display, second only to BOE (17.8%). /p>
As of January 2020, LG Display ranked fourth with 10.8% LCD market share, a decrease of 6.4 percentage points from the same period in 2019. The top three are BOE (18.7%), CSOT (17.4%) and Innolux (13.9%).
This clearly reflects LG Display’s strategic focus on OLED panels in its large-scale panel business. In fact, the company recently announced that the share of OLED in its TV panel sales has increased from 24% in 2018 to 34% last year. During the same period, the company's 8.5th-generation LCD for Samsung display production capacity increased from 69,000 units to 79,000 units.
